.ITL Files

The .ITL file type is the extension associated with the i-Tunes music database application.

This file extension is a Windows file extension that is used when interfacing an Apple product (i-Phone, i-Pod) with a PC or Windows-based laptop.

Apple products (iMac, PowerBook, NetBook) do not use the .ITL file extension. If you have an Apple computer, have partitioned the hard drive and are running both the Leopard OS-X and Windows Vista operating systems simultaneously, the .ITL file extension will be present on your Mac.

Apple iTunes in the Windows operating environment uses an .ITL database to enable you to organize your music library by song title, artists, genre and to create music-specific playlists, add comments about your library and to rate your songs.

Opening .ITL Files

The i-Tunes Library .ITL file is first created when you install the i-Tunes application under the Microsoft Windows Operating System environment on your computer - be it PC or Mac (see above). The .ITL file is also associated with another file - the i-Tunes Music Library .XML file. The .XML file resides in the same directory folder as i-Tunes and makes the music and playlists accessible to other software applications (Windows Media Player, RealPlayer etc.) besides i-Tunes. You must have the i-Tunes application installed correctly on your PC or Mac in order to open an .ITL file.

If you have the i-Tunes software installed on your computer and are still unable to open an .ITL file then you are likely facing a different set of problems. Most likely you do not have the correct version installed, it is not installed correctly, or there is an incorrect file association within the Windows Registry. Most file extension errors due to wrong association or a possible problem with the Windows Registry, can be easily resolved by installing the appropriate application for the file type or correcting the Windows Registry errors with the use of a good registry cleaner.

Common Problems With .ITL Files

Aside from the occasional corrupted .ITL file, you may also have some difficulties opening .ITL files if you have an earlier version of i-Tunes. You can resolve this problem by: moving the .ITL and .XML files outside of the iTunes directory, downloading and installing the latest version of iTunes. Once you have upgraded to the the newer version, simply launch i-Tunes and import the .ITL and .XML files back into the i-Tunes directory

Another common problem occurs when Microsoft Windows is unable to open an .ITL file from the "Windows explorer" - this generally occurs when an .ITL file has been sent as an e-mail attachment. In this case failing to open this file in Windows initiates a it does not recognize the .ITL file extension - most likely because there is no application associated with the .ITL extension, or the i-Tunes application is not installed in the system. Another important point to note is that the .ITL file contains information on the location of the music files and not the actual files themselves therefore, if you only have the .ITL file and nothing else, then you don’t actually have the music represented in the .ITL file - so it is useless to reinstall the application since the database will be pointing to non-existent mp3, mp4, QuickTime or other audio files.

Security Issues With .ITL Files

There are some critical issues with some versions of i-Tunes that create security risks to the system that includes the ability of attackers to remotely take over your computer system by remotely launching arbitrary codes contained in malicious email or web sites.

Another vulnerability issue relates to what is known as a "boundary error" inherent to the MPEG-4 files played by the i-Tunes .ITL file. Hackers have been known to exploit a weakness in the MPEG file parsing to intentionally cause a memory buffer overflow which allows for the execution of malicious code. The memory overflow code can be inserted into files associated with the .ITL file - for example .MOV files - a "heap overflow error" (executed when your PC or laptop begins to processing/open infected .MOV files) in the i-Tunes application can allow attackers to control your system, track your keyboard strokes with a "keylogger", retrieve personal data from your PC, unknowingly direct you to a web that you did not intend to visit or even destroy the machine itself.

These malicious codes can be delivered and dropped into your operating systems through an .ITL file. It is particularly risky to import music from unknown sources or from non-commercial web sites because they are more vulnerable than frequently visited commercial web sites.

Be wary of opening .ITL files, or any other files for that matter, sent by anonymous individuals as e-mail attachments or downloaded off the Internet. Opening unknown .ITL files can present the danger of virus and/or spyware infection. Before opening one of these file extensions ensure it comes from a source you trust, you have good anti-virus, anti-spyware, spam controls, privacy software, a registry cleaner and trusted data recovery tools activated and protecting your system.

Be sure to regularly scan attachments and all files in your computer system with an up to date anti-virus application or anti-spyware software, and ensure that it is really safe to open the .ITL file.
