.PBP Files

The .PBP file extension is associated with the Perl language and the Perl Builder software application.

Perl has been used since the early days of the Web to write CGI scripts. It is known as one of "the three Ps" (along with Python and PHP), the most popular dynamic languages for writing Web applications. Many popular high-traffic websites such as Amazon.com, Ticketmaster.com, and Craigslist.com use Perl extensively.

Opening .PBP Files

In order to open a .PBP file you must have a version of Perl installed on your PC or laptop.

Perl is free and widely available on the Internet. Although Perl is free software it is licensed under both the Artistic License and a General Public License. Versions are available for most operating systems but Perl is particularly prevalent on Unix platfoms. However Perl is also included in many popular operating systems including Windows and the Mac OS-X operating systems.

If you do have Perl properly installed and and are still unable to open a .PBP file then you are likely facing a different set of problems. Most likely you do not have the correct software application (or version) installed to open the file, or there is an incorrect file association within the Windows Registry. Most file extension errors due to wrong association or a possible problem with the Windows Registry, can be easily resolved by installing the appropriate application for the file type or correct Windows Registry errors with the use of a good registry cleaner.

Hacking Perl

Perl is the chosen scripting language for the majority of system administrators because it is designed for text and file processing and is just right for UNIX administration including database and web programming and provides users with more than one way of accomplishing tasks.

Perl developers utilize warnings and strict pragma in debugging codes because warnings provide helpful information on how to get into the code while strict pragma prevents execution of the code when a strict approach programming style is utilized. Pragma in the Perl context instructs the compiler on how to parse the code. Taint checking is another tool that prevents the execution of arbitrary code from malicious users breaching system security. Lexical scoping is implemented to protect various parts of the modular code from one another and to prevent the assigning of new values to variables that need to be left unchanged until a later time.

These security features are inherently provided in the language for the precise purpose of protecting applications from being tampered with. Remember, that if it can be breached, it is a potential security threat to the system. In order to protect the computer system and data, it is best to implement security protection during the application development process and to employ computer system security measures like anti-virus and anti-spyware tools.

Perl Application Security Flaw

The format string vulnerability in the web based administration utility was initially regarded to cause a denial of service attack. It was established that an attacker could actually gain full control of a server that is executing a vulnerable application by exploiting the flaw. A successful remote code execution can lead to full remote root vulnerability under a standard configuration.

Attacks on this new breed of vulnerability have been made possible through format string bugs that are coded using low level programming languages. Since Perl is popularly implemented on web applications, this can be exploited by attackers to breach improved operating system securities especially those that are not supported by dependable anti-virus applications that provide real time detection and removal.

Web servers become potential targets of attacks, because of the numerous Perl scripts that are available to anonymous remote users. To implement system protection, it is important that applications are updated and security tools (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls and the likes) installed in the computer system. Unless Perl developers address this issue, it will remain as a growing potential security threat for web based applications.

Stronger Random Passwords

One of the advantages for web developers and system administrators in using Perl is that it can address the network security risk presented by weak passwords created by user accounts. This is the basis for constant checking and replacement of user account passwords and depending on the level of network security implementation, system administrators can even generate and assign user account passwords to ensure that they can be strong enough to set back an attack.

The key in implementing this security feature is to generate a strong yet easy to recall randomly generated password that by all intents and purposes is the first line of defense for attacks using this breach method. Once a password is broken, an attacker can easily corrupt files or inject a malicious code that can ultimately infect the local and wide area network through various transport methods.

CPAN helps to address this need, with modules that can automatically generate passwords and append the functionality to various applications. Password protection forms part of the best practice protection that includes implementation of various utilities that can detect and defend against intrusions like viruses, spyware applications, trojans and malware and maintaining system health through cleaning and optimizing the registry. Anti-spam, privacy controls and data recovery software are also must-haves for today's home computer protection protocols.
