Version Incompatibility: A good first step when you cannot open a .PDF file to to ensure you have the most recent version of Acrobat Reader installed on your computer - if you are using Acrobat Standard ensure you have upgraded to the latest version. Virus or Corrupted Files: Never discount that the .PDF reader has been corrupted due to a virus, or the downloaded .PDF file may have an attached malicious code like a malware or spyware application that caused the corruption. Security Threats with .PDF Files

Given that .PDF files are a universal file type that will open within both the Windows and Mac OS operating environments - therein lies the power and the problems with self-executable files. Their power stems from their ability to self-execute and automatically launch either Adobe Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Standard, whichever software is currently installed on your PC or laptop. Once the .PDF file opens and launches Acrobat you have no control over what else may be launched from within the .PDF file itself. If there is any malware coded into the .PDF file it will infect your computer when you open the .PDF file and launch Adobe Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat Standard.

Installing a dependable anti-virus software program and regularly scanning files (especially downloaded .PDF files or data sent as email attachments) are effective ways to protect not only your computer system but also other computers connected to your network.
