.STB Files
.STB file are a file type used by the AutoDesk Inc. AutoCAD 2000 software application. AutoCAD (CAD stands for "computer aided design) is a design and drafting tool used to create two and three-demensional engineering plans and models. AutoCAD is used to model, test and produce as-built plans and 3-D models in the following industries:
The .STB file extension (in concert with the .DWG file type) enables AutoCAD to set up a drawing environment for plotting and drawing architectural and other schematics. The .STB file extension is a more modern version of the .CTB files which earlier version of AutoCAD used to represent colour plot styles. The older .CTB standard files are still supported in the newer versions or AutoCAD. Opening .STB FilesIn order to open a .STB file you must have the AutoCAD 2000, or newer, application properly installed on your PC or laptop. Creating a plot style can be done through the Add A Plot Style Table Wizard in the File menu that launches the wizard where Pick Plot Style and Plot Style Table Editor options are chosen. Other commands are available by right clicking the Plot Styles box. The default name given by the application to a new Style is Style#, which you can simply change to a more suitable name when you save the file. The Plot Style Manager allows the editing of a .STB file, which utilizes exactly the same dialog boxes that are displayed during the creation process. You can then make changes on the color, screen and line weight property of the plot style in order to represent your drawing they way you envision it. Once you have completed the drawing the. STB file can then be assigned to a layout (after correctly configuring it for plotting) and utilized by the AutoCAD application. If you have the correct software installed and still cannot open a .STB file you may also be dealing with a totally different set of issues - a problem with the file association between the .STB file extension and the AutoCAD application. Fortunately most file extension-related errors can be easily resolved by running a Windows Registry Optimizer which cleans the Registry and repairs many of these types of problems. These programs also tend to keep the Windows Registry working efficiently, speed up the PC or laptop and generally keep the computer functioning smoothly. Common Problems With .STB FilesThe majority of AutoCAD users are familiar with the .CTB file extension for plot styles but you may not yet be familiar with its .STB counterpart. This at times, leads to confusion in correctly identifying the file type. There are instances when users are confused because the file extensions have changed from .CTB to .STB creating problems when you try to plot your image or schematic. Both file types are actually validly implemented within the AutoCAD application. However, when a problem arises in accessing .STB files, it is not enough to copy them to the location of the Plot Style Tables (usually this would reflect a .STB file missing error message), you will need to use the "CONVERTPSTYLES" command to instruct the application to convert the .STB file to .CTB file. To convert the .CTB file to a .STB file you will need to use the CONVERTCTB function to properly implement the plot style. Once you have created the .STB file this is no going back - you will not be able to add any other plot styles to the .STB file. Security Threats With .STB FilesAutodesk has released a security update for its product line in order to address the security threat in which a allow an outside user to gain unauthorized access to another local user’s computer system. The update specifically addresses this issue for all of the affected products produced by Autodesk. Installing the security update will require an administrator rights privilege, downloading the AdskScSrvHotfix.exe file from the Autodesk website and running the .EXE file to install the security update. As a best practice it is always recommended that you scan the.STB files prior to opening them in order to avoid being the victim of a of virus or having to spend time and money getting rid of malware or other dubious codes. It is recommended you take every precaution before opening this file type even if it was delivered or e-mail or download from a trusted source. Be sure to have anti-virus, anti-spyware, spam controls, privacy software, a registry cleaner and trusted data recovery tools activated and protecting your system.
