.Torrent Files

The .Torrent (also known as BitTorrent) file extension is a program designed for peer-to-peer (P2P) media file sharing over P2P networks.

BitTorrent P2P media file sharing offers a distinct advantage over other P2P networks. On most file sharing sites you browse each other's computers to find and download files directly. With BitTorrent, large media files are taken apart and downloaded in small components, allowing multiple people to download different bits from an array of different users' computers simultaneously. When you choose to download a media file, the BitTorrent program finds you the fastest connections for each part of the file, which makes downloads much faster.

Opening .Torrent Files

New users to the BitTorrent protocol are sometimes confused about the relationship between the .Torrent file and the media file that they want to download. The .Torrent file is the first step in downloading the media file, and is downloaded so that the computer can find and access the desired media file. Torrent files contain information about the media file, where the media file can be found, instructions for download and descriptions of the file distribution.

Before you can download BitTorrent media files you will need to download a BitTorrent client program, such as uTorrent or Azureus. The client program provides the interface between .Torrent files and the media files they represent. When you download a media file through a P2P torrent site such as isoHunt or Torrentz the first step is to download and install the .Torrent file.

Common Problems with .Torrent Files

When first starting to use a torrent client you might not be able to download .Torrent files until the client is the designated program to open the files. You can configure your computer to open .Torrent files with your software client by first saving the file to your computer desktop. Right click on the file to open its drop down menu, then click Open With. Find the name of your torrent client on the list and click it. On the pop-up box you can check the box to Always Use the Selected Program to Open this Kind of File to save the setting.

If the correct software is installed and you still cannot open a .Torrent file then you may be dealing with a totally different set of issues - a problem with the file association between the .Torrent file extension, the software application that created it and the Windows Registry. Fortunately most file extension-related errors can be easily resolved by running a Windows Registry Optimizer which cleans the Registry and repairs many of these types of problems. These registry optimizer programs also tend to keep the Windows Registry working efficiently, speed up the PC or laptop and generally keep the computer functioning smoothly.

Security Issues with .Torrent Files

There are very rarely problems downloading .torrent files, they are small and transfer quickly. The most common errors that users report with .torrents are related to Internet connections and media file transfer speeds. With the BitTorrent protocol, the more users that are offering the files, the faster your computer is able to download the file. However, your computer needs to be properly configured to allow the connection and support the download. Overall, .Torrents are a user-friendly way to download files quickly and easily.

Be wary of opening .Torrent, or any other generic file for that matter, sent by someone you do not know or if you download it off the Internet. There have been cases where attachments disguised as .Torrent files were actually viruses that were waiting to be activated when they were launched. Opening unknown .Torrent files can present the danger of malware or virus infection. Before opening one of these file extensions ensure it comes from a source you trust, you have good anti-virus, anti-spyware, spam controls, privacy software, a registry cleaner and trusted data recovery tools activated and protecting your system.

Be sure to regularly scan attachments and all files in your computer system with an up to date anti-virus application or anti-spyware software, and ensure that it is really safe to open the .Torrent file.
